Opens, championships and youth tournaments 12

The Ruhr's tournament calendar is carried by its clubs. The largest event is the International Dortmund Chess Days in August, with open tournaments around the Sparkassen Chess Trophy, held at the Alte Schmiede cultural centre in Huckarde. Essen has the Ruhrhalbinsel-Open of the Kupferdreh club, and Wanne-Eickel the Unser Fritz-Open, which doubles as the individual championship of the Ruhr federation.

Rheinhausen, on the left bank of the Rhine in Duisburg, runs a cluster of its own: the Rheinhausener and Bergheimer championships and Schach in den Mai. Youth tournaments come from the clubs of Werden and Dortmund, and Oberhausen plays a seniors' championship in summer. The list is grouped by month; events with a date given ahead come first, and every entry shows where its date comes from.
