About this list
Herne plays chess in two halves, Herne itself and Wanne-Eickel, each with clubs of its own. In Wanne-Eickel, Schachverein Unser Fritz meets in the parish centre of St. Barbara and runs the Unser Fritz-Open, a rated open that also serves as the individual championship of the Ruhr chess federation; Schachgemeinschaft Wanne meets on Thursdays.
In Herne itself, SV Zeppelin Herne holds club evenings on Tuesday and Friday, and SK Sodingen/Castrop in Sodingen trains children and juniors on Friday evenings outside the school holidays. Unser Fritz also lists a Chess960 tournament in its club calendar, one of the very few Chess960 dates in the region. Herne clubs play in the Herne-Vest district of the Ruhr federation.
